Background of the Study
Hydration plays a critical role in cognitive performance, influencing memory, attention, and overall brain function. Research suggests that even mild dehydration can impair cognitive abilities, leading to reduced concentration, slower reaction times, and increased mental fatigue (Akinyemi et al., 2024). Water is essential for maintaining neuronal function, regulating neurotransmitters, and facilitating oxygen delivery to the brain (Oladipo & Yusuf, 2023).
In Kebbi State, students often experience inadequate hydration due to limited access to clean drinking water, prolonged school hours, and poor hydration habits. Given the importance of cognitive function for academic performance, understanding the impact of hydration on students' mental capabilities is crucial. This study aims to assess the effects of hydration levels on cognitive performance among students in Kebbi State, providing recommendations for improved hydration practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the well-established link between hydration and brain function, many students do not consume adequate water throughout the day, potentially affecting their cognitive abilities and academic outcomes. There is limited research on hydration habits among students in Kebbi State, making it necessary to investigate how hydration status influences cognitive performance in this context.
Objectives of the Study
To assess hydration levels among students in Kebbi State.
To examine the relationship between hydration status and cognitive performance.
To evaluate interventions aimed at improving hydration habits among students.
Research Questions
What is the hydration status of students in Kebbi State?
How does hydration influence cognitive performance among students?
What strategies can be implemented to promote proper hydration among students?
Research Hypotheses
Poor hydration is significantly associated with reduced cognitive performance.
Students who maintain optimal hydration levels exhibit better academic performance.
Hydration interventions improve students’ cognitive abilities and concentration levels.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Kebbi State, analyzing their hydration levels and cognitive performance. Limitations include reliance on self-reported hydration data and individual differences in hydration needs.
Definitions of Terms
